What is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides backup power to electrical equipment when there is a power outage or fluctuation in the primary power supply. Its purpose is to protect critical systems and prevent data loss or damage caused by sudden power interruptions by ensuring uninterrupted operation.

A UPS supplies power to connected devices when the power source fails. This device connects the electrical outlet and your equipment, ensuring consistent and uninterrupted power. This is achieved through internal or external batteries that store electrical energy. This energy is then released to connected devices during power disruptions.

UPS units come in various sizes and capacities, ranging from small devices that power a single computer or home office equipment. They also come in large industrial-grade systems that support entire data centres or critical infrastructure. They typically feature multiple outlets to connect various devices, including computers, servers, networking equipment, telecommunications systems, and sensitive electronics.

UPS devices also offer surge protection to safeguard connected devices against voltage spikes or transients. Voltage fluctuations, which can occur due to lightning strikes or utility power irregularities, may damage sensitive electronic components. The UPS detects such anomalies and diverts excess voltage to protect connected equipment.

In addition to providing backup power, many UPS models offer features such as automatic voltage regulation (AVR) to stabilise voltage levels, power conditioning to filter out electrical noise, and remote monitoring capabilities to manage and monitor the UPS system from a central location.
