Secure Power Makes Games History

Global information and technology company, Fujitsu, successfully secured a £6.1 million deal to provide the phone network for this summer’s 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The famous sporting event brought together over 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories, to compete in a number of sports and para-sports competitions across 15 venues – including the new aquatic centre at Sandwell.

With over a million spectator tickets sold, and millions more tuning in online, organisers for the Games knew they needed to deliver an advanced infrastructure and connectivity experience. This was all required within a significantly condensed time period, whilst also considering the physical and economical impact of Covid-19. All partners would need to work together efficiently to ensure the full breadth of services remained online and there were no technical issues during the event.

To safeguard the operational requirements of their installation, Fujitsu selected Secure Power to provide the critical backup power solution. In total, 130 UPS systems and PDU units were supplied to support the event stadia and media rooms, with the company also offering full system monitoring and emergency cover throughout the duration of the Games.

With the required high-level security clearance in place, Secure Power brought together a team of just over 100 data engineers to carry out the installation. Due to the exceptionally tight timescales involved for both installation and decommissioning, the works had to be carried out to a strict schedule to ensure all activities were completed as agreed.

The UPS solution selected was the Riello 3kVA Vision Dual with sinusoidal digital technology. Chosen for its advanced communications and connectivity options it was the ideal solution for an installation that required superior protection and versatility in the power supply system.

The Riello Vision Dual UPS Range offers protection of peripheral network devices, conventional or rack servers and network back-up systems. Its automatic voltage regulator (AVR) provides protection from surges, overvoltages and undervoltages without battery intervention. This reduced battery usage ensures the battery set is 100% available for mains supply failures at all times, thereby providing greater autonomy. Offering an efficiency level of 98% the units reduce energy consumption, which in turn assisted those tasked with organising the Games to work towards meeting their carbon footprint goals.

As a brand agnostic UPS provider, Secure Power has access to one of the largest stock holdings in the UK. Despite a very strict timeframe, the company was able to supply and deliver the full complement of UPS, battery boxes and network cards within the required timescales. This exceptional level of stock availability allowed for a seamless integration of backup power protection into the Commonwealth Games infrastructure.
