Being Resilient In Recession

Leading uninterruptible power supply (UPS) specialist, Secure Power Ltd was founded over 13 years ago amidst the fallout of the 2008 economic crisis, which ultimately led to the 2009 recession. The business is no stranger to dramatic falls in GDP value or near 10% rises in costs. In fact, the last Great Recession championed much of Secure Power’s early success.

As the UK teeters on the brink of another economic downturn, the company’s managing director, Jonathan Morley, recounts why he chose to set up his business despite all the commercial adversity and how Secure Power is preparing for what could be yet another fiscal slump.

“I am finding the headlines surrounding recession tiresome. The swirling rumours about financial depression  - generaterated by our great free press who continue to print ‘Europe is heading for recession’ headlines and speculate about the collapse of stock markets, whilst not letting us forget about the unimaginable impact of Covid (-19), is, in my opnion, irresponsible scaremongering.

“In essence, these reports are stunting business growth. All the negativity is leading to fear – businesses are second guessing themselves, holding back on investment, plans; apprehensive about innovation and anxious about the future. What a morbid state of affairs. It should not be this way. Businesses, much like the individulas that form them, need to be inspired and motivated in order to thrive.

“I like to think that I am a pragmatic, glass half full person, and am known to be a straight shooter. So back in 2009, as the UK was emerging from the deepest recession since the Second World War, and while many others were panicking about the future of their organisations and making short-term plans to tackle the financial blows being dealt, I was thinking about root causes and what businesses really need to remain operational.

“Most industries are dependent on technology; on power. Without it, even the simplest of tasks cannot be achieved. From gaining access to a building, switching the lights on and sending an email through to recording a sale, despatching and manufacturing, our daily lives rely on power.

“As the name suggests, Secure Power exists to protect power supplies. Rather than resisting potential problems, we encourage people to plan for failure – power failure that is. Power disturbances are one of the ‘what ifs’ you can be prepared for. Ensuring you have a reliable supply of power is one of the core fundamentals of business operation and as mentioned, is essentional to keep businesses running. Without power – there wouldn’t even be a business to sustain.

“Secure Power used the 2009 Great Recession to its advantage. We listened to the market, worked closely with our clients and met their ever changing demands. We vowed to be versatile, flexible, accommodating – and the very very best. Our tenacity and commitment have led us to be one of the most competitive power protection specialists in the country.

“Our message was, and still is clear. Companies can only beat the recession if they remain in business and a critical component of that is to stay operational. That requires reliable power, which can be guaranteed with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) . Yes, of course I would say that - I own a UPS company! But please, think about it logically, pragmatically even. Businesses are powered by not just electrical power but powerful people too. As a business owner, you can make the right decision and invest in your core, organisational structure. Make sure your company can operate smoothly, without interruption. Should any electrical devices be impacted by a disturbance in power supply, this can have huge financial ramifications. A reliable source of power really is essential.

“If you haven’t already, protect your electrical applications with a UPS solution – lights, PC’s, telephones, EPoS – whatever equipment that is critical to your business – it needs to be supported by a backup power system. If you already have a UPS solution in place, that’s great; you’re one step ahead but please don’t forget to take care of it/them. UPS servicing and maintenance is just as important, if not more so than just having a UPS unit in place.

“It is all very well having a UPS unit but if it is not regularly serviced it could end up being redundant. A UPS system not only delivers clean, reliable power to electrical devices but it also provides backup power in the event of a complete mains failure.

“I’m not going to bleat on and on about the pros and cons of UPS solutions or UPS maintenance. I’m really here to try and showcase some positives as the country leans on the edge of a ‘deep, dark’ recession. We know businesses will be struggling and Secure Power can help, not just with our UPS systems but in the service we provide. We offer flexible payment terms, multi year UPS maintenance contracts with staged payments, value engineered solutions and I think most importantly, a highly skilled technical team, which offers advice and guidance for protecting and maintaining complete electrical infrastructures. We are doing what we can to help beat the recession.”
